Clarence Sumner Janifer, Sr., M.D. (March 13, 1886 – November 14, 1950) was a physician and the first African American member of the Medical Society of New Jersey. ==Biography== He was born on March 13, 1886 in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated from the Homeopathic Medical College of the State of New York in 1915. He practiced in Newark as a pediatrician. He was the first African American member of the Medical Society of New Jersey when he joined in 1916. During World War I he was a medical officer in the infantry, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. He then worked for the Newark Health Department. He went on to obtain two master's degrees in public health. He died on November 14, 1950 in Newark, New Jersey.
